چکیده
Wann-Nian Tzeng, Chou-En Wu and Yu-Tzu Wang (1998) Age of Pacific tarpon, Megalops cyprinoides, at estuarine arrival and growth during metamorphosis. Zoological Studies 37(3): 177-183. The age of Pacific tarpon, Megalops cyprinoides (Broussonet), at estuarine arrival was estimated by counting otolith growth increments from specimens collected in the Gongshytyan Brook estuary of northern Taiwan on 15 to 24 September 1995. The daily deposition of otolith growth increments provided a mean to estimate age of individuals. Tarpon at estuarine arrival were in the 1st metamorphic stage. Their body lengths ranged between 17.8 and 32.9 mm TL (mean = 25.6 mm TL) and ages between 20 and 39 d (mean = 28.5 d). A metamorphic mark within the otolith indicated that the fish had begun to metamorphose several days before arriving at the estuary. Negative correlations between age estimates, and both somatic and otolith growth rates indicate that faster-growing tarpon arrived at the estuary earlier than did slower-growing ones. Otolith growth continued while body length was reduced during metamorphosis. The duration of metamorphosis for Pacific tarpon was estimated to be approximately 14 d.

Facultative habitat selection in Pacific tarpon Megalops cyprinoides as revealed by otolith Sr:Ca ratios
The Pacific tarpon Megalops cyprinoides is a euryhaline fish that is widely distributed in offshore waters of the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific Ocean. It spawns in offshore waters and the larvae drift with tidal currents before recruiting to estuarine nursery areas at ~25 to 30 d posthatching. Young Pacific tarpon are found in coastal waters, rivers, estuaries, inner bays, and mangrove ...
متن کاملEffects of ram speed on prey capture kinematics of juvenile Indo-Pacific tarpon, Megalops cyprinoides.
We examined the effects of variation in swimming speed, or 'ram speed', on the feeding kinematics of juvenile Indo-Pacific tarpon, Megalops cyprinoides. Tarpon were filmed feeding on non-elusive prey at 500 images s(-1). Prey items were offered at one end of the filming tank, the opposite end where tarpon grouped, to encourage them to use a ram strategy to capture their prey. We describe tarpon...

We examined the effects of water temperature, salinity and feeding regime on leptocephalus metamorphosis, and on daily growth increment deposition and strontium:calcium (Sr:Ca) ratios of otoliths in the Pacific tarpon Megalops cyprinoides. The tarpons at the pre-metamorphic leptocephalus stage (SI) were collected in the estuary, marked with tetracycline and then reared for 18 and 30 d in 2 inde...
متن کاملPartitioning of respiration between the gills and air-breathing organ in response to aquatic hypoxia and exercise in the pacific tarpon, Megalops cyprinoides.
The evolution of air-breathing organs (ABOs) is associated not only with hypoxic environments but also with activity. This investigation examines the effects of hypoxia and exercise on the partitioning of aquatic and aerial oxygen uptake in the Pacific tarpon. The two-species cosmopolitan genus Megalops is unique among teleosts in using swim bladder ABOs in the pelagic marine environment. Small...
متن کاملThyroid hormones are necessary for teleostean otolith growth
Experiments were conducted to understand the effects of thyroid hormones and thiourea (TU) on otolith growth during metamorphosis of leptocephali. TU is an anti-thyroid hormone drug that inhibits the production of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in the thyroid tissue. Fully grown leptocephali of tarpon Megalops cyprinoides collected at the mouth of the Gong-Shy-Tyan Brook, N Taiwan, we...
